Aniline is a transparent liquid dye (and natural derivative) used to colour high quality hides. These dyes provide permanent colour that also allows natural grain and markings to show through.
Pure aniline leathers are created from the highest quality top grain. No additional pigment or surface treatments are applied after the dyeing process, which is called tanning and this process takes 5 weeks. It’s basically enhancing the patina of the hide using natural oils. So every defect is clearly visible, scarring, mottling, wrinkling, shading - these are all distinctive features. The quality of this leather is outstanding, and is considered the most luxurious and stylish. Less than 5% of the world's leathers qualify as pure aniline which would explain their high cost.
Aniline leather breathes better and wears longer than more processed leathers. As the surface of the leather allows it to breathe, this keeps it cool and supple.
The feel and luxurious smell of leather can’t be reproduced and because no two hides are exactly alike, and telltale scars and blemishes will be visible somewhere else on the surface.
It will vary slightly in colour, but we match the sofas before they leave our warehouse. We make sure all the items are from the same batch of leather and matched as closely as possible.
No. Healed up scar tissue is one of the strongest points in the hide.
No. Research has proved that real leather is far stronger along stitching than imitations.
If you rub the scratch gently with your finger – the warmth from your finger will dissipate the waxy finish on the leather, which will move to recover the mark. If this does not work, try rubbing gently with a clean cloth that has been lightly dampened with clean water.
